Guidance in Conflict

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another”

(John 13:35)

I came home tired, hungry and ready to relax. However, the house looked as though a tornado came through. Jackets, backpacks and shoes littered the living room. I huffed as I crisscrossed the floor as if avoiding landmines. However, when I got to the kitchen, I stopped dead in my tracks and stared at the mountain of garbage. It extended well past the top of the garbage can spilt to the floor. I marched to the back of the house shouting for the girls to come out. They did, completely unaware of the impending assault.

My younger daughter said that it was the oldest turn to take out garbage and the reported it was the other’s responsibility. Back and forth they spouted out, “Well, I cleaned the bathroom Saturday, ““and I took out the garbage day before!” Back and forth the accusations flew.

That kind of reaction and behavior is not exclusive to my daughter’s fighting over chores. Unfortunately, you often find Christians involved in the same pugnacious displays.

Any time we are faced with conflict, it is our natural human emotion to feel anger and want to lash out. We feel fear and want to defend or attack. We feel wronged and want to get revenge. Often this just makes matters worse. I tell you that I just want to get even, make sure that I am proved right.

However, that attitude is not compatible to how God wants us to think.

Conversely, if we tenaciously hang onto biblical teaching, we’ll find the power to act rightly. Holding on to God’s Word we can avoid behaviors that can be both sinful and self-defeating. There is more than just getting practical guidance from the scriptures, but theology to help shape our thoughts and feelings. It is just as important to find out how to handle a situation as how to think about the church and God.

Just as God and Jesus are as one, we as Christians should also be united in our thoughts with Christ.

The more you look to Jesus, the more you will discover how you are to act in controversial and divisive circumstances. The more you depend upon Jesus, the more you will find unexpected strength to be agreeable, loving, humble, and Christ-like.
